Health Tip: Chia Seeds
Besides being the seed used for Chia Pets, the Chia Seed is an amazing food. When you hydrate the seeds in water the seeds shell opens up and absorbs up to NINE times its volume in water. This then forms a gel, which is called Chia Seed Gel. The gel helps keep your body hydrated over the long term. The gel is 90% soluble fiber, which is beneficial for your digestive track. People use the seeds when they are involved in sports or physical activities for endurance. They are also cheap, a huge 2lb. bag can be bought on Amazon for about $13. |

Fitness Tip: Warm Up Before Cool Weather Workouts
Fall is here and the last thing you want to do is injure yourself because you didn't take time to warm up and stretch before your workout or sport specific activities. Everything seems to work better once it's been warmed up. Whether it's your car, food or your significant other, everything functions better once we warm it up! Take 5 minutes do some joint rotations, jog in place or jump rope, just get your core temperature up, and your blood circulating. Once your body is sufficiently warmed up, then it's time to stretch it out.
Start at your core (back and torso), then work your way through your upper and then your lower body. Do sport specific stretching. Hold each stretch 15 to 30 seconds. Do not bounce! Bouncing can lead to serious injury and that is what you are trying to prevent. I remember when I joined a gym years ago; they gave me a free fitness assessment. My strength was above average, my endurance was average, but my flexibility was that of a stone, ultimately contributing to a ruptured Achilles tendon on the second play of a pickup basketball game, pretty embarrassing. I learned my lesson the hard way. The basic benefits of stretching have always been improved athletic performance and a decreased risk of activity-based injuries, but those are just the ones athletes focus on. Some of the added benefits of stretching are increased circulation (blood flow), range of motion, reduced muscle tension, enhanced coordination and increased energy. Increasing your circulation and range of motion will help you have a better quality of life the older you get.
| The term 'if you don't use it you lose it' applies greatly to stretching. Losing range of motion can make everyday tasks such as tying your shoes, house cleaning and even making the bed almost impossible tasks for seniors. Poor circulation can cause tingling and numbness in your feet and hands, low energy, a sluggish memory and can contribute to diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. As I grow older I recognize how important warming up and stretching is for just relieving the stresses and tensions accumulated during the day. That stuff we tend to hold in our neck and shoulders, but in reality it permeates through our whole body. And these days we all seem to be carrying a little more stress. When you get older falling can be lethal, but learning proper warm up and stretching techniques now enhances your coordination and balance that can carry us through the remainder of our lives.
Proper stretching routines can contribute not only to longevity but also to quality of life. As important as a balanced diet, good muscle tone and a healthy cardiovascular system are, it all begins with a solid warm up and stretch. This week we dedicate our newsletter to stretching out your quality of life. We have provided some products below that are dedicated to help you warm up and get a good stretch. If you have a favorite product or stretch that you would like to share with us please send us an email or post it on our facebook page and we will try to include it on our website and subsequent newsletters. Make proper warm ups and stretching apart of your daily routine like brushing your teeth and combing your hair and I guarantee you’ll have better days ahead.
